Ride Description
Picnic ride to Abiquiu Lake Dam overlook. KSU Thunderbird HD 8am. Arrive with a full tank and an empty bladder. Make sure you have a lunch packed with food and drinks. Leaving TB we will exit the parking lot turning right and on to the I-25 north on ramp. We will continue north to the Santa Fe by pass 599 also known as the Veterans Memorial Hwy. Interesting fact. During the Bataan Death March, approximately 10,000 men died. Of these men, 1,000 were American and 9,000 were Filipino. This had a huge impact on New Mexico families. Of the 1,816 200th and 515th Coast Artillery men identified, 829 men were to never return home, losing their lives in battle, in prisons, or after liberation. As we by pass Santa Fe we will get on 285/84 north with a gas stop on the north end of Espanola at around 85 miles give or take. North of Espanola we will turn right onto 285 north heading to Ojo Caliente north of here we will turn left on to state rd 111 for a few miles then left again onto state rd 554 which will take us through El Rito and back to 285. Here we will turn right heading to Abiquiu and eventually to state rd 96 which will take us to the overlook area. There are restrooms and picnic tables here for a break and lunch. To get back home 96 will get you to 550 and into Cuba about 60 miles away. Or you can head back through Espanola. Counties you can check of are Bernalillo, Sandoval, Santa Fe and Rio Ariba.
